Lim was born in Vancouver in 1991. When he was two years old, the family moved back to its home country of Singapore. They later returned to the US when Lim was 11. Growing up in Acton, Massachusetts, Lim took violin and piano lessons while developing an interest in magic. He attended the School of Music at Lee University until he learned that he had carpal tunnel syndrome. This diagnosis pushed him away from music and towards magic. He began to produce videos on YouTube and create his own tricks to sell to others. Lim competed in the International Federation of Magic Societies World Championship for the first time in 2012, finishing in sixth place. He returned to the competition in 2015 and ended up winning it. He has performed all over the world solo and as part of The Illusionists, a Broadway-style magic show. In 2018, he won America's Got Talent, and as part of the prize, he'll be a headliner at the Paris Theater in Las Vegas. Find tickets for one of the magic shows on the Shin Lim tour at StubHub.
Lim is known for his unique approach to magic, blending classic sleight-of-hand with some modern elements. In his close-up magic tricks, he's able to do things like make a card face as well as a full deck of cards disappear. He has created a way to produce a small amount of smoke without a spark or an obvious origin, and he often uses this as part of his act. Another trick that he's known for is called "52 Shades of Red." While the specifics could vary in different performances, it involves changing the faces or backs of a whole deck of cards with just a swipe of his hand.
